Chrysanthemum

Another classic autumn flower is the chrysanthemum, which blooms from August to November depending on the variety. Chrysanthemums are often used to add decorative splashes of colour to pots by front doors or on patios, as they last for weeks. They can also be planted successfully in the garden. Bear in mind, however, that most chrysanthemums are not hardy, even if they usually come through the first frosts unscathed. The hardy white-flowered variety 'Poesie' is the best choice for flower beds. The soil should be rich in nutrients and free-draining, as chrysanthemums do not tolerate waterlogging. Position is particularly important: the sunnier their spot in the garden, the more profusely chrysanthemums will flower, and the more sheltered they are from the wind, the longer their flowering period will be. In winter, chrysanthemums should be protected with brushwood or leaves.
